How our doctors help

Community care or specialist opinion?

Most people with long-term (chronic) pain can be supported by their GP and local healthcare team without needing to see a pain specialist. However, our specialist pain doctors still play an important role. They support patients and healthcare professionals by sharing expert advice quickly through electronic messages, phone calls, or in clinics when needed.

There have been big advances in how we understand chronic pain. One of our main roles is to help people understand their pain and how it affects them. People with chronic pain often have other health conditions and may take many medicines. A specialist pain doctor can help work out the best care plan, including advice on treatments, medicines, and other options. Sometimes, we may suggest scans like MRI or offer injections for certain types of pain, such as spinal pain, when it’s the right choice.

Dr Greg Hobbs

Lead Consultant in Pain Medicine

I am a Consultant in Pain Medicine who has been developing and working with specialist and community pain services for many years. People with chronic pain benefit most when they have ongoing community access to a multidisciplinary team of clinicians who can provide them with the right expertise, assessments and care choices. I work closely with the PICS team to offer this expertise and care, helping people understand and explain why they have pain, and to deliver their agreed plan of care.

Dr Laura Marshall

Pain Specialist GP

I qualified as a doctor in 2006 and a GP in 2016. During my career I have trained and worked in several specialist areas, including urgent care, substance misuse, homelessness, and prison medicine which led me to discover my passion for Chronic pain. I have worked with PICS pain service since 2021 and continue working within primary care alongside this.

Dr Michal Czernicki

Consultant in Pain Medicine

I am a Consultant in Pain Medicine / Anaesthetist who works with patients and the wider PICS Pain team to determine an optimal managemnet plan. I provide injection therapies as part of my role.

Pain treatments

Managing pain works best when people use self-management techniques, but sometimes medicines and other treatments can help too. In some cases, injection therapy may be a good option.

Our medical team and Advanced Practice Physiotherapists will assess whether injections might be right for you. You can read more about the types of injections we offer below.

Testimonials

Dr Hobbs was so kind and gentle during my injection. I was so nervous he put me completely at ease.

I came to the pain clinic confused about my diagnosis, having heard a hundred different explanations! The doctor took the time to listen to me and explain thoroughly what was going on. I am now much clearer about the cause of my pain and how to help myself. I look forward to the group I am going to attend.

Dr Marshall made sense of my many medical conditions and how they are all contributing to my pain. I had no idea how complicated it could be but now feel I can move on with help from the whole team.
